Faculty Awards

2007-2008 Academic Year University Teaching Award

Jeff Paterson, who teaches taxation, was awarded a 2007-2008 academic year University Teaching Award. Nominations from students are collected by the Office of the Provost, who makes the decision to honor members of the faculty with the University award. Dr. Paterson joined the Accounting Department faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1995, and he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. Students say that Dr. Paterson is an enthusiastic and thorough educator, who is concerned about his students. One student mentioned that "Dr. Paterson enjoys tax and wants his students to enjoy it too." We are happy to extend congratulations to Dr. Paterson.

Beta Alpha Psi 2008 Teacher of the Year

Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting honor society, awarded their Teacher of the Year for 2008 to Dr. Joe Icerman at their Spring 2008 Banquet in April.

Dr. Icerman came to the Florida State University College of Business in 1977, as an Assistant Professor of Accounting. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1983. Dr. Icerman was Chairman of the Department from 1985-1993. He has served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Program, College of Business since 1993 until the present.

Dr. Icerman teaches ACG 3101 (Financial Accounting and Reporting I), which is the very first class in their curriculum our accounting majors take

2008 FICPA Educator of the Year

Dr. Bill Hillison, currently the Andersen Professor of Accounting at Florida State University College of Business, has been instrumental in shaping the profession of accounting for more than 30 years. Dr. Hillison received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Accounting from Northern Illinois University before earning a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1977. He began his academic career as an instructor of accounting at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh in 1971. Dr. Hillison came to FSU in 1977 and has held the Andersen Professorship of Accounting at FSU since 1991.

Dr. Hillison has served as a guide and mentor to thousands of students who have later earned the CPA designation and excelled in the profession. He serves as the coordinator of FSU's Master of Accounting program and he has chaired 12 dissertations and served on an additional 13 dissertation committees.

Dr. Hillison is the author of more than 70 professional and academic articles, which have been published in dozens of academic and practitioner journals.

He has served as the liaison to the FICPA spring and fall FSU Accounting Conferences for practicing CPAs for more than 20 years, helping to develop programs, obtain speakers and give presentations. Years after graduation, former students cite Dr. Hillison's knowledge and enthusiasm for accounting as an inspiration. Said one colleague, "I consistently hear nothing but positive comments from former students who have benefitted from Dr. Bill Hillison's instruction."

Beta Alpha Psi 2007 Teacher of the Year

Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting honor society, awarded their Teacher of the Year for 2007 to Dr. Bruce Billings at their Spring 2007 Banquet in April.

Dr. Billings came to the Florida State University College of Business in 1996, as an Assistant Professor of Accounting. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. In addition, Dr. Billings holds the distinction of KPMG Fellow, which is an award of recognition sponsored by that accounting firm.

He teaches ACG 3101 (Financial Accounting and Reporting I), which is the very first accounting class our majors take. Students have commented that the class Dr. Billings teaches is one of the most important because this class sets the tone for classes in accounting which follow. He also teaches Financial Accounting and Reporting III, which is the advanced version of financial accounting.

Students value that they are always able to visit Dr. Billings in his office, when they have questions and concerns outside of class, even beyond his usual office hours.

Faculty Service Award

Dr. Bill Hillison has been selected as the 2006 recipient of the Joan H. Raley Faculty Service Award, in recognition of his extraordinary service to the College of Business and its students. The Joan H. Raley Faculty Service Award is given each year to a faculty member who provides exceptional service to our students. Dr. Hillison works tirelessly with our students, advising them regarding CPA requirements and, in particular, he works unstintingly with our Masters of Accounting (MAcc) program. He spends countless hours advising both traditional accounting undergraduates and those wishing to enter the MAcc program with an unrelated undergraduate major. Dr. Hillison has significantly increased both the average GMAT score, and the number of students in the MAcc program. He also works very closely with several of our present and past doctoral students, publishing numerous articles with them. Congratulations Bill!

University Teaching Award

Jeff Paterson, who teaches taxation, and Ron Pierno, who teaches the introductory course to financial accounting and taxation, were both nominated for a University Teaching Award for the 2005-2006 academic year. Students may nominate faculty members which they feel are deserving of this award. Nominations are collected by the Office of the Provost. We extend congratulations to both of these faculty members upon their nomination.
