Profiles of Accounting Majors

I believe that the accounting degree is the most versatile of all of the business degrees. An individual holding an accounting degree can work in most any business discipline, but the holders of other business degrees can generally not be employed as accountants.

My perspective is a unique one. I actually studied Computer Science as an undergraduate. One summer before I graduated, I worked as a bank teller. That was when I learned that I really enjoyed working with money. I was almost obsessive with the record-keeping aspect of the transactions I processed and I always looked forward to balancing my cash drawer at the end of the day.

After I graduated with my Computer Science degree, I worked as a Software Engineer at a U. S. defense contractor. After two years, I decided to go back to school to study accounting. I soon learned that an accounting education provides graduating business majors with the most career opportunities.

Since I began my doctoral studies at Florida State University, I have developed an interest in auditor judgment and decision-making. This is an important area of research because so much of the auditor's opinion is based on judgment. My current research investigates how an auditor's memory influences his or her judgment.

I believe that prospective PhD students who are considering various programs should ask a lot of questions in order to find the program that is the best fit. Every PhD program is different and there is no "one size fits all." I suggest inquiring about the reputation of the school, length of the program, graduation rate, placement of graduates, faculty research interests, opportunities for co-authorships, and how well the doctoral students work together.

When I initially visited FSU, I felt very welcomed and I believed I would be able to maximize my career opportunities by earning my Ph.D. here. One thing that makes Florida State unique, is the congenial body of doctoral students in the College of Business. This is not an institution that fosters competition among students. As a result, everyone is friendly and eager to help each other. I have made some incredible friends at Florida State. We have gotten each other through some rough times and shared in celebrating the good times. I am sure that we will keep in touch far into the future.
