Profiles of Accounting Majors
I always envisioned myself in some fashion of business. My dad owned a real estate business in Central Florida when I was a kid. After taking "Introduction to Financial Accounting," the first course in the Accounting curriculum, I knew that Accounting was something that I really enjoyed. I also liked the idea of understanding the "language of business", as Accounting is sometimes referred to. When I visited Florida State University, I was very impressed with the technology enhanced classrooms and professional environment. The social environment and the prestige of the athletic program also appealed to me. As a Teaching Assistant in the Introduction to Accounting class for two semesters, I enjoyed the opportunity to pass along the basic knowledge of Accounting. As a word of wisdom to Accounting majors just starting out, "do your homework". There is a distinct difference between understanding of concepts and being able to apply them. The Accounting faculty at FSU challenged me every day. They were able to do this because they have a wealth of experience, and a dedication to teaching students. The class sizes were small so it provided the opportunity to ask questions, and the professors were always available to meet in their office hours to clear things up. I enjoyed the classes in financial Accounting the most. They really gave me a broad perspective of how a business operates and of how each decision affects the bottom line. At the beginning of my junior year I joined the Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi. I got the chance to meet a lot of other students who were in my classes. Additionally, these organizations allowed me to network with recruiters of the Accounting firms and to get to know the recruiting process. During my last semester I interviewed with the Big Four accounting firms. After accepting a job with Deloitte & Touché, in Fort Lauderdale, I decided to get my Master's in Accounting (MAcc) at Florida State. I am very pleased with the MAcc program at FSU. Just like in my undergraduate studies at Florida State, the class sizes are great and the faculty is very knowledgeable. I am excited about starting my career in public Accounting, but I will not forget the great memories I have here at FSU. John Heath Masters Student |
