Profiles of Accounting Majors
I knew before I came to school that I was going to major in accounting. I heard it was a difficult major and decided I wanted to give it a shot. It turned out to be a great decision. When a student is making a decision about a major to pursue, I think it is important to consider where your major is going to lead you after you graduate. A major turns out not to be just what classes to take, but also is a starting place for your career. Having some sort of plan or idea of what sort of a job you are aiming for after graduation is a key part of choosing a major. I believe an accounting degree stands out from all the other business degrees, because it not only allows you to pursue a degree in accounting, but the education you receive gives you the opportunity to go in a variety of other directions, as well. There are a couple tips I would give any student planning on becoming an accounting major. It is not easy. Numerous hours are required to prepare for the difficult exams. Some of the concepts are very complex, and a thorough understanding of the topic is necessary. It's not enough just to memorize the information and regurgitate it on the exam. But like anything else in life, if you dedicate time and effort to studying the material, you will be successful. After receiving my undergraduate degree, I decided to continue on to get a masters in taxation from Florida State. In undergrad you get to learn all the underlying concepts of accounting. In graduate school, you get to apply the concepts to real life scenarios. It was interesting to see how all the things I had been learning apply to real life situations. The Masters of Accounting program at FSU was a great experience. The classes were really small and it allowed students to build good relationships with their classmates. The accounting world is not very big, and I'm sure I will be running into past classmates after I soon begin working for one of the Big Four accounting firms in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
