Profiles of Accounting Majors
It is my opinion that students should go to a school where they feel comfortable. Each school has a different atmosphere. The atmosphere here at FSU is laid back and relaxed, and I also believe the undergraduate Accounting classes are unique at FSU. The classes give a very comprehensive view of all of the accounting concepts, and the coursework also really helps prepare students for the CPA exam. As I am sitting through my CPA review courses I can think back to the specific class that I took in which I first learned each concept covered. If you do well in the accounting classes at Florida State, studying for the CPA exam will be merely a review of material you already know. I believe it is important for students to try to figure out what they would like to do for their career when choosing a major. Try to keep in mind all of the issues like available job opportunities and experiences that a job can provide you with to help you grow. I think Accounting is an ideal major because it allows students to go into many different careers. You could certainly work for a Big Four accounting firm, you could choose to be a comptroller or financial manager of a corporation, or you could even work for a governmental agency. The job market for Accounting graduates is better than any other major that I know of. I have no doubt that the key to doing well in Accounting is studying. Students need to make sure to do all of the homework that is assigned, and try to understand the material rather than just getting the work done. Study hard while you're at The College of Business, at Florida State. Absorb all the knowledge you can, and the benefits will come in your career. The Accounting Department at FSU is great, because teachers are available to help students in and out of class and are very approachable. I've even asked a few professors to help me with some questions I had at work, and they were happy to lend their expertise. In the Masters of Accounting curriculum, sometimes we take classes which are actually a part of the MBA program, and it is always apparent which students in the room are Masters of Accounting students. We all know each other and hang out and study together. I believe there is a fairly obvious bond between the students of our MAcc program. I'll definitely keep in touch with the people I've met in the Accounting program. I've made a lot of friends while studying here at FSU.
