Profiles of Accounting Majors

After graduating from high school, I never intended to go to college. I originally considered joining the military, but I decided to give community college a try. After completing my two-year degree at Tallahassee Community College and having experienced the diverse and unique culture of Tallahassee, I knew that I wanted to stay in the area to pursue my bachelor's degree. Another factor in my decision to stay was that my older sister had already completed her undergraduate degree in the College of Business at Florida State University, and she noted many positive things about the university.

My reasons for selecting Accounting as a major, to be frank, were somewhat shallow. These included my father's "vision" of me one day becoming an accountant, the fact that I liked working with numbers, and hearing that the profession offered a fairly decent salary. However, after taking my first Accounting course, I thought that it might not be the major for me. Although I got a good grade, I didn't think I really had a good understanding of the material. Nevertheless, I stuck with it, and as a result, learned an invaluable skill that I will now be able to use in my personal and professional life.

The help and encouragement I have received from the entire faculty in the College of Business and Florida State at large, will always stick with me. From professors going beyond their duty to help me better understand class material to staff in the Accounting office helping me obtain scholarships, support was always there. As a result, what I have learned at FSU goes beyond my comprehension of Accounting and Finance; I have also learned the gift of service and helping others to achieve their goals. The relationships that I have gained during my tenure at Florida State are priceless.

Two of my greatest passions in life are working with children and activities involving math. Therefore, I battled with understanding how my degree in Accounting and Finance would address my passions. However, in the future I know that wherever I am I want to be in a position to give back to others around me. Whether it is through teaching or being a good role model, I plan to give back the knowledge, experiences, and lessons that I have learned throughout my life.

Through my accomplishments and discouragements while studying Accounting at FSU, I have grown to appreciate the quote by Thomas A. Edison, "I have not failed 10,000 times, I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work." In order to be successful and to get the most out of your college experience you have to be open to learn new things, meet new people, be adventurous, and get to know the environment around you. Don't live in a box, but always remember why you are here. Learn how to manage your time and prioritize, live a balanced life, and in the end you will have a successful college adventure!
