Profiles of Accounting Majors

Business is my second career. I originally started in the computer field doing programming and systems analysis work. I have a technical background including engineering degrees. I realized that I had a strong interest in business from running a computer consulting business and investing my retirement savings. One day a couple years ago I decided to take an accounting class and I really enjoyed it. So I continued taking more accounting, finance and other business classes and eventually decided to pursue a Masters degree in accounting.

I think the best way to understand how a business works and makes profits is to understand the financial records of the company. Accountants understand a business from a unique perspective and accounting is the most rigorous major in the business college. An accounting degree prepares students for a wide variety of jobs in any business field.

With recent SEC rules and Sarbanes Oxley legislation, CEO's and members of boards of directors are being held responsible for a company's financial statements. The best way to truly understand a business's financial position is to study accounting. A great way to prepare for a future career as a corporate leader is to begin with an accounting degree.

The best thing about studying accounting at Florida State University is the professors. Many of them have PhD's and CPA licenses and real world experience as accountants. That practical experience comes through in the classroom in the form of good practical examples and a perspective on what concepts are most important. They are approachable and easy to talk with. I have received a lot of good advice from several of my professors. The professors here are good teachers and nice people. The tuition is also incredibly affordable at FSU compared to most other good schools. Another excellent resource at FSU is the library, especially access to all the online databases.

The FSU Accounting Department has an excellent program for students who earned an undergraduate degree in a field other than business. The Master of Accounting program for non-business undergraduate majors entails about a year of undergraduate business prerequisites and a year of graduate coursework in the accounting department, resulting in a Master of Accounting degree.

Professional work experience is very helpful before pursuing a graduate degree in business, whether it is an MBA or a Masters in Accounting. My previous experiences give me a greater understanding of how the theories and concepts taught in the classroom will apply in the real world.

Having lived in several places in the north and Midwest I really enjoy Tallahassee's mild climate and practically non-existent winters. Tallahassee is a small city with plenty of things to do without all the traffic or high cost of living of larger cities.

As I started the Master of Accounting program I was planning to become a CPA but as I took several finance classes as electives I have decided to pursue more of a financial analyst/money manager career. The knowledge and skills I have learned in accounting classes, like preparing financial statements and understanding cost accounting, will be very applicable to doing financial analysis of companies.
