Profiles of Accounting Majors

Growing up in Upstate New York, I was unaware about the rivalry that existed in the South between Florida State University and The University of Florida. But then, as an early teenager who just moved to South Florida, I was forced to choose a side. As a new Seminole fan, I went through high school thinking about the choices I would have to make regarding college; and one of those choices regarded what major I would pick. Throughout high school, I was heavily involved with DECA, an international club of business students, (Delta Epsilon Chi is the college-level organization) and it was there that I realized that business was my forte.

Once I started studying at Florida State University in 2004, I chose Accounting as one of my majors not only because of the challenging coursework, but also for the numerous employment opportunities I would have once I earned a degree in the field.

In FSU's College of Business, I enrolled in classes that helped me earn my Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, and Real Estate, and learned concepts that allowed me to become a financially conscious citizen. The professors in the College truly believe in the futures of their students and are experts in their fields. I felt that I could turn to them not only for assistance with coursework, but also for advice regarding my career and my future.

Yet, college is much more than just classes. During my past few years at FSU, I have realized that some of the most important aspects of college are the extra-curricular activities in which one can participate. Not only did I attend many Fall football games and play on various intramural sports teams, but I also joined many clubs and organizations that helped me to network with students and professionals alike.

The most influential organization that I joined was Beta Alpha Psi. This organization provides opportunities for its members to build their resume, familiarize themselves with career possibilities, and socialize and interact with other business students. In the 2007-2008 school year, I was the FSU College of Business chapter's Treasurer and am currently, during the 2008-2009 school year, serving as Beta Alpha Psi's President. Through the organization, I have been able to become friends with many of the students that shared classes with me. I also have had opportunity to meet a great number of professionals from the Big Four accounting firms, local and regional firms, and many government agencies who attend the weekly meetings.

By being an officer in Beta Alpha Psi, I feel that not only can I get my career off to a good start, but I can also give advice to younger students who are just beginning to meet and interview with recruiters. I also have participated in the Business School Allocations Committee and hope to soon represent the College of Business as its Chairman.

Currently, during the summer of 2008, I am an intern at Ernst & Young (Big Four accounting firm) and plan to attend Florida State University once again in the fall 2008 semester to work towards my Master's degree in Taxation. During the upcoming year, I also plan to follow many of my older peers by studying and sitting for the CPA exam. Once my schooling is complete, my goal is to work full-time for a Big Four accounting firm, to one day become a partner in the firm, or perhaps work in the private sector as a corporate executive. I am excited for the future and know that with the education I have received here at Florida State, I will be able to achieve my goals.

There are many pieces of advice I would give to students just entering the College of Business. The first would be to think of the reason why they entered college -- to get a degree. I have seen many friends get caught up in the social aspects of college and that has caused them to lose focus on their schoolwork; consequentially they performed poorly in their classes or they even dropped out of college altogether. I recommend keeping a balance beween the social and the academic aspects of student life.

I would also highly recommend that students get involved! By joining clubs and organizations both in and out of the College of Business, they will be able to enhance their college experience greatly. By joining these clubs, they will be able to network with other students, faculty, and professionals who can greatly influence their professional career. To meet and socialize with other students with whom they share classes will strongly build success, and to become involved in academic and service activities will build a student's resume, too.

I would also highly suggest that new students attend the Seminole Futures Career Fair. With such a large number of firms and companies in attendance, students can get their name and face out to recruiters early. In addition, I would advise new students, also, that there are many difficult classes within all of the business majors. Most students first realize this during the Introduction to Financial Accounting course. Many students take this class with other pre-requisites of the College of Business and think that this class will be similar in nature to other typical classes taken at the sophomore level. Yet, classes like this beginning accounting class require studying and reviewing throughout the entire semester, not just right before the exam.

I have truly enjoyed my time here at FSU so far, and I look forward to another great year of being a Florida State Seminole!
