Profiles of Accounting Majors

I will be the first to admit that Accounting was not my first choice when it came to choosing my major. I always knew I would pursue a degree in business, but which major, specifically, was yet to be determined. During my first introductory course in Accounting, I noticed my knack for the material and thought I would give it a chance. The more I learned, the more I came to understand it as the "behind-the-scenes" of the business world. Two years and plenty of late nights studying later, I received my Bachelors of Science in Finance & Accounting, narrowed my focus to tax, specifically, and joined the Master of Accounting Program (MAcc).

Originally from Miami, I knew I wanted to stay in Florida for college, and after visiting Florida State University - my choice was clear. Compared to some of the other schools I had visited, I liked the smaller campus size and student life. Being from a big city, the small town atmosphere of Tallahassee was exactly the change of scenery I was looking for. Although, looking back, attending an Accounting Program ranked 24th in the country didn't hurt either.

For anyone interested in joining the Accounting program at FSU, I would encourage them to get involved. I really believe that what you put into FSU, is what you'll get out of it. I joined the Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Fraternity my first year at The College of Business and it helped me make relationships and establish contacts with professors, other students, and most importantly, professionals in the industry. This has been an incredible resource for me, which has opened lots of doors, and I would recommend every Accounting student take advantage of it. Not to mention, I believe that The College of Business has offered me a top-notch education from professors who genuinely care about the academic and professional development of their students. Florida State differentiates itself from other institutions by the relationship their professors have with their students - they really care.

Now, as a graduate student, I've accepted a Teaching Assistant position with the FSU Accounting Department which is giving me a new perspective on the Accounting profession. Teaching has been a great experience and is something I would enjoy doing in the future, in a part time capacity. I wouldn't mind instructing a CPA preparation review course, or working as an adjunct professor at a university.

For the more immediate future, however, I have accepted a position with Ernst & Young, one of the Big Four accounting firms, to join their Tax Department in May 2008. I am looking forward to putting all the things FSU has taught me into practice, and I am very proud to call myself an Alumni.
