Profiles of Accounting Majors
When I was growing up, I actually wanted to be a math teacher. I was pretty good at the subject and liked to help others, so I thought it would be the perfect thing to do. However, as time went on, and under the impression that accounting involved math, I decided to change my major, before I even got to college, from mathematics and education to accounting. I figured that getting a degree in accounting would be better than getting a degree in math because of the greater career possibilities accounting offers. In all honesty, I did not like accounting at first because it wasn't what I expected. It turned out that the math involved is not really what's important; the concepts behind the numbers have the greater importance in accounting. However, since I didn't want to start over with another major, I decided to stick it out and see what would happen next. What happened next occurred in my last year of undergraduate studies. I had my first tax class, Individual Taxation, and although it was tough, I found that I really enjoyed tax. I felt that it was so practical and relatable on a large scale because almost everyone pays income taxes. The highlight was when I was able to actually help my mom in some aspects of her tax return and do my own. It felt so good! And of course the math is there too, so I got to experience both of the things that I wanted to do since I was a little girl: helping others and doing math. After I finished my undergraduate degree, I decided to get my Master's of Accounting (MAcc), specializing in Taxation. Choosing to stay at FSU to get my MAcc was an easy decision. I already knew the area and some of the professors who would be teaching, and I knew that the program was well respected among some of the top employers. It just didn't make sense to leave. When I finish my graduate program, I will begin work as a Tax Accountant with Ernst & Young, in the Tampa, Florida office. In the future, I'd love to go back to my original plan to teach because it is still something that I want to do. And since I have two degrees in the subject, and will have had work experience, it is only fitting that I teach accounting, and preferably tax. Getting a Bachelor's and Masters in Accounting was by far no easy task. There is some material that I encountered that made me want to throw my book out the window, but I never did. If I found it becoming too difficult, I just took a break from it. Also, doing the homework more than once helped me out a lot. Accounting is a challenging field but it is not impossible. It may require a little extra effort and hard work, but in the end, I feel that it is completely worth it.
