I can't believe it has been 1,000 days since I became the Dean of the College of Business at Florida State University! During the last 1,000 days I have met with over 1,000 alumni, friends and benefactors of the College. I have met many of you in your homes, in your businesses, at intimate gatherings hosted by our alumni and at large College or University sponsored events. I am still amazed at your willingness to serve on our Boards, speak in our classes, mentor our students and provide much needed internships and jobs. I am also thankful to those of you who continue to financially support the College through gifts large and small. Each of you contribute to the success of the College and ensure that it thrives into the future. As many of you know, the University is facing a severe budget shortfall due to the unprecedented shortfall being experienced by the state of Florida. In order to meet the expected shortfall, the University instituted a hiring freeze last month. In the College this impacted three faculty searches that we had underway. We were able to hire two faculty members before the hiring freeze was instituted and these offers will be honored. We are working on a variety of budget scenarios depending on the type of budget cut the College is required to take. We are using our strategic plan to make decisions as to what to cut, and we are working hard to ensure that we continue our move to preeminence. As you will see below, the College continues to excel, even under difficult circumstances. COLLEGE NEWS U.S. News & World Report Rankings

Wetherell and the deans of the College of Business and the College of Social Sciences, Paul Sullivan, BB&T Tallahassee president, and Nan Hillis, president of BB&T's Orlando-based East Florida Region, announced that the company is presenting the university with two gifts totaling $3 million to establish several new programs. The gift announcement was held on Nov. 7 in the plaza between the Rovetta Business Building and the Bellamy Building. The following day, BB&T was honored with an on-field recognition at the FSU vs. Clemson football game. The College of Business' gift will establish a program that will encourage a thorough discussion of the moral foundations of capitalism. John Allison, chairman and chief executive officer of the BB&T Corporation, was instrumental in the development of the gift to the College. Read more. Private support for the College is essential as we move toward preeminence. One excellent way to make a difference is to make a gift through your estate plans. This ensures future generations of college students benefit from this generosity. Special thanks to Randy and Caroline Smith, who have made a substantial estate gift to support the mission of the College. The Bond Foundation gave an additional $50,000 for the Bond Foundation Graduate Assistantship in Accounting, which supports fifth-year accounting students. Kim Tabah joined the Dean's staff in October as the new Annual Giving Development Officer. Tabah will secure private support from alumni and friends on an annual basis. As mentioned earlier, annual gifts are used in the current operating year, providing discretionary funds to be allocated where they are most needed. Thanks to alumni giving, 27 undergraduate and graduate students secured a competitive spot to meet business icon Warren Buffett in October. Students spent half the day with Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and billionaire investor, asking him questions and touring Nebraska Furniture Mart and Borsheims, subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway. Dr. Bill Christiansen, director of the College's Gene Taylor/Bank of America Center for Banking and Financial Studies, led a discussion on the current state of the economy. John Wallace ('07 MBA), a risk consultant with Protiviti, was the board's reception host. "There is strong support for the FSU College of Business and its MBA program," Wallace said. This will occur because we have great students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. I appreciate all that each of you do. Enjoy the holiday season.
