INDEPENDENT INVESTOR AND CONSULTANT - Venture capital investment in high tech start-up companies.
- Worked for PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS CONSULTING, advised DFCC Bank, a leading Sri Lanka financial institution, on developing its long term strategy.
MERRILL LYNCH & CO. (1971 - 1999 (early retirement))
1998 - January 1999 : Managing Director, Merrill Lynch International - strategic development initiatives. Resident in New York.
1994 - 1998: Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of DSP Merrill Lynch Ltd., Mumbai, which became the leading Indian merchant bank. Executed three joint ventures, managed a comprehensive securities business, changed corporate culture and integrated all business and support lines with Merrill Lynch. Resident in Mumbai. 1991 - 1994: Managing Director responsible for Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Active privatization, finance and advisory work with personal focus upon Hungary, Russia and the Arabian Gulf. Resident in London.
1989 - 1991: Managing Director responsible for Latin America and Eastern Europe. Staff of forty-five in a niche merchant bank with businesses of positioning and trading, underwriting of new issues, financial engineering and distribution. Personnel located in four Latin American countries, New York and London. Resident in New York.
1984 - 1989: Senior Advisor, Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (on secondment). Responsibilities included managing the Kingdom's reserves (in excess of $ 150 billion) as well as providing economic policy advice to the Governor of this Central Bank and the Minister of Finance. That included designing the Kingdom's domestic debt issuing program, providing analysis and action with regard to monetary policy and the domestic banking system, relationships with other central banks and intergovernmental agencies, oil market analysis and a broad range of issues. Work also involved providing conceptual frameworks for investment, computerizing decision making and operations, training Saudis, and actual day-to-day decision making. Over 80% of the Kingdom's reserves were invested in debt securities and cash equivalents in ten currencies and these portions of the assets were invested under my direct supervision. Nearly 20% of the assets were invested in equities by some twenty fund managers whose selection was made and whose performance was reviewed semi-annually by my team. Resident in Riyadh.
1981 - 1984: Managing Director, Investment Banking. Developed client list entirely by taking away major U.S. corporations from competitors, primarily through new financing ideas I helped develop, such as tax effective debt for debt swaps and multi-currency convertible securities. Resident in the New York area.
1976 - 1981 : Managing Director in charge of Investment Banking, Europe and Africa. Responsible for client relationships, including governments, agencies and corporations, some directly and others through my staff of twelve investment bankers. Also responsible for Euro financings, including syndication desk. Resident in London.
1973 - 1976 : Vice President in charge of Investment Banking, Far East. With a staff of four professionals, executed financings for Japanese corporations and Korean agencies, most of which were new clients. Dominated Japanese issuance of securities in U.S. market. As first fully licensed foreign underwriter in the Japanese domestic market, developed and executed strategy for Japanese domestic business. Resident in Tokyo.
1971 - 1973 : International Finance Department, New York.
U.S. ARMY
1966 - 1970 : Captain, Infantry. Airborne Ranger, Pathfinder. Small unit command in Vietnam during and after the 1968 Tet offensive with 101st Airborne Division, followed by training of Rangers in the mountains of north Georgia. Thirteen awards and decorations include : Combat Infantryman's Badge; three Bronze Stars of which two are for valor; Air Medal; Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm.

1961 - 1965: Left college after sophomore year to work with this non-profit organization because of its ideas. One year in Europe followed by a year and a half in Asia, mainly Japan but also India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. In the U.S., with a handful of contemporaries began a program which developed into UP WITH PEOPLE.
