Press Release

"We live in a world where information is sent and received instantaneously, and this technology allows companies to play a role in this communication arena," says David Paradice.

FSU College of Business students don't simply use apps,
they make them

Tallahassee, Fla. – Say you need a room at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, or you are traveling to the resort for a conference and you can't find your meeting; Management Information Systems (MIS) students in the Department of Management at the FSU College of Business can help – simply go to the new Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort application on your iPhone.

Available online through the Apple App store, the application, developed by MIS professor Steve Payne and three of his students, puts information about reservations, guest room details, dining options, property maps and a video tour at the fingertips of iPhone and iTouch users. The application represents the first of its kind; an application designed for an individual hotel property.

"We live in a world where information is sent and received instantaneously, and this technology allows companies to play a role in this communication arena," says David Paradice, the Sprint Professor of Business Administration in the FSU College of Business. "Creating this cutting edge technology is the passion of our department and our students, and having companies incorporate it is a realization of its success in the marketplace."

The programmers were focused on providing a visual experience for users, not just putting text on the screen. The application makes use of the large, color iPhone and iTouch screens and employs Hotel View, the world's largest travel and tourism library distribution network, as well as other photography.

"At the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort we are constantly seeking new ways in which to improve our customer experience," said General Manager Paul Scott. "The development of this tool is one more way in which we can assist our guests in having the best possible experience during their stay with us."

The development of applications for smart phones is nothing new to MIS professor Payne, who has been working with this technology for quite some time within the MIS program's Mobile Computing Project. This project, which used a third server to convert information to the appropriate size for phones and other portable devices, resulted in the availability of FSU's Blackboard and Secure Applications on phones. The Mobile Computing Project also spurred the creation of a virtual Legacy Walk through Florida State's campus.

The completion of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort application has opened the door for more projects in the same vein. Projects are already underway for the Westin Times Square hotel in New York (www.westinny.com).
