George teaches Taiwanese to compete academically Taiwan's top research council invited Joey George to be one of six speakers for its 2007 Management Summit this summer. The summit focused on helping Taiwanese scholars learn how to better compete on the global stage, said George, who is the College of Business' Thomas L. Williams Jr. Eminent Scholar in Information Systems.
The National Science Council, Taiwan's version of the United States' National Science Foundation, organized the summit at the National Taiwan University at Taipei. Six internationally prominent scholars, including George, were chosen to interact with Taiwanese scholars and doctoral students. Summit participants went through a highly competitive admissions process to gain a place at the event. "They are among the nicest, most generous people I've ever run across," George said of his Taiwanese hosts. The summit highlighted the fields of marketing, information systems and management science. Most Taiwanese industry and research is related to information technology, such as work with semiconductors and LCD screens, George said. George presented a lecture on "The Joys and Perils of Cross-Disciplinary Research." Last year George wrapped up a cross-disciplinary project for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in which he studied detection of deception in communications, such as e-mail and instant messaging. As editor-in-chief for Communications of the Association for Information Systems, George also provided Taiwanese scholars critiques of their work and guidance in getting published. Guest speakers also recommended which participant research proposals will receive funding from the National Science Council.
