RMI Internships

The RMI Department works closely with the insurance industry to develop opportunities for internships and other forms of interaction between students and insurance professionals. Over the years, RMI students have participated in internships with insurance companies, brokers, and agencies, as well as the risk management departments of non-insurance companies. These paid internships usually take place over the summer months, although some students have taken advantage of opportunities in Tallahassee during the course of the academic year. Many are offered on a regular (typically annual) basis to FSU students majoring in risk management and insurance. While a majority of these internships are located within the state of Florida, many have taken students out of state to cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Charlotte.

In recent years, the RMI Department has worked to assist its students in obtaining internships sponsored by a variety of professional and educational foundations. Most recently, Lisa Harrington submitted an opportunity from Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA). Other opportunities include the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IF), the Intermediary and Reinsurance Underwriters Association (IRU), the National Association of Professional and Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) [read more], and the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS), among others. In each case, there is nationwide competition among students to participate in these programs, and the sponsoring organization provides financial assistance and/or pay to those selected. Students in FSU's risk management and insurance program have been very successful in applying for these positions - in fact, in the inaugural year of the BFIS program in Bermuda, two of the ten students participating in the program were from Florida State University.

In addition to internships, students are encouraged to attend meetings of various industry associations. These meetings provide students with the opportunity to interact with industry professionals as well as take part in educational programs designed for the industry participants. Each year, the RMI department nominates a deserving student to participate in the Student Involvement Program sponsored by the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS). If selected by RIMS, the student receives financial assistance (including travel, lodging, food, and meeting registration) to attend the RIMS annual (national) meeting. The RMI department has also worked with the Florida chapter of RIMS to fund attendance for students at both the national RIMS meeting and the annual meeting of the Florida chapter. Similar opportunities have been provided by the University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA), the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA), the American Surety Association (ASA), and the Self-Insurance Educational Foundation (SIEF).
