THE FIRST TWO YEARS
PROGRAM PLANNING FOR STUDENTS INTENDING TO MAJOR IN BUSINESS
2009-2009
As a business student, you should plan the first two years (60 hours) of your course work in the areas described below. Most of the courses during this time will not be business courses. You will be establishing the broad foundation upon which you will build your business knowledge and your business career. This is your opportunity to become the well-rounded, well-educated individual that is sought after for leadership positions in today's business world.
- Liberal Studies Courses: You must complete at least 36 semester hours in five areas. An overall GPA of at least 2.0 must be earned on course work used to fulfill the Liberal Studies requirements. All courses taken to fulfill the Liberal Studies requirements must be taken on a letter grade basis (not S/U). The specific course requirements are detailed on accompanying pages.
- Multicultural Courses: You must complete one course emphasizing Cross-cultural Studies and one course emphasizing Diversity in Western Experience. Cross-cultural courses are designated with an "x" following the course number; diversity courses are designated with a "y" following the course number. The same course may be used to satisfy a Liberal Studies course requirement and a multicultural course requirement. You must earn a grade of "C-" or better in courses taken to satisfy the multicultural requirement.
- Gordon Rule Writing Courses: In addition to the two English courses required in the Liberal Studies program, you must complete four courses that are designated as "Gordon Rule Writing Courses". Gordon Rule Writing Courses are designated with a "W" following the course number. Courses used to fulfill this writing requirement may also be used to satisfy Liberal Studies course requirements and Multicultural course requirements. You must earn a grade of "C-" or better in courses taken to satisfy the Gordon Rule Writing Requirement.
- Computer Competency Requirement: You will satisfy the FSU Computer Competency Requirement by completing CGS 2100, Microcomputer Applications for Business.
- Oral Competency Requirement: You will satisfy the FSU Oral Competency Requirement by completing an upper-level course required of all business majors. Therefore, you do not need to be concerned about completing this requirement during your first two years (60 hours).
- Business Prerequisite Courses: You must complete the following courses with a grade of "C-" or better in each course.
ACG 2021 Introduction to Financial Accounting
ACG 2071 Introduction to Managerial Accounting (not required for accounting majors)
CGS 2100 Microcomputer Applications for Business
ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics
ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics
MAC 2233 Calculus for Business and Non-physical Sciences
STA 2023 Fundamental Business Statistics
To be eligible for admission to the limited access programs in business, you must have completed all of the courses above, except ACG 2071.
- Elective Courses: In your first two years, you should plan to complete at least 60 semester hours. The specific course requirements described above do not total 60 hours. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to take elective courses of particular interest to you. The number of elective courses will depend on the courses you select to satisfy the specific requirements above. If you choose courses that simultaneously satisfy more than one requirement, you will have the opportunity to take more elective courses. Elective courses should be courses outside the College of Business. You should choose courses to explore areas of interest to you, to improve your communication and reasoning skills, to learn or improve your knowledge of a foreign language, and to broaden your academic background.
